CAR-T cell therapy in China: eight approved products at a third of the US price
What CAR-T is and who it is for
CAR-T therapy re-engineers a patient's own immune cells to attack certain blood cancers — mainly relapsed or refractory leukemias, lymphomas and myeloma that have exhausted standard options. It is one of the few genuinely new weapons oncology has gained in a generation, and eligibility is a strict hematologist's decision, not a consumer choice.
China's position, in numbers
China has registered more CAR-T clinical trials than any other country — over 850 ongoing studies, ahead of the United States. Eight products are approved, priced between ¥999,000 and ¥1,290,000 per infusion (about US$140,000–180,000) — high in absolute terms, yet roughly a third of the US$400,000–500,000 list prices in the United States. A next wave is pushing lower still: one domestic product has filed for approval at around ¥200,000. At the Boao Lecheng pilot zone, therapies approved abroad but not yet in mainland China can also be legally accessed.
The sober part
CAR-T is serious medicine with serious risks, weeks of hospitalization, and outcomes that vary by disease and patient. No one should travel for it without a hematology team at home involved, complete records, and a formal eligibility review by the receiving center — which can be arranged remotely first.
