Singapore, Thailand, India or China: where to go for treatment abroad

What each destination is best at

Singapore: the region's premium standard — flawless English, tight coordination, and prices to match (a median private bypass bill of about US$84,000). Thailand: hospitality-grade comfort and two decades of experience with international patients, at upper-middle prices. India: low prices for standard procedures, with strong English-speaking hospitals. China: world-tier capability for complex, high-risk and rare cases at regulated public prices — plus technologies its neighbors lack, from heavy-ion radiotherapy in Shanghai to hundreds of not-yet-imported drugs at the Boao pilot zone. It is the only destination on this list where the top tier of capability and the bottom tier of prices meet.

A simple decision rule

Ask one question: what exactly does my case need? If the answer is comfort and English, look at Singapore or Thailand. If the answer is the lowest possible price for a routine, uncomplicated procedure, look at India. If the answer is surgical depth for a hard case, a rare-disease team that has seen your condition many times, a therapy that exists in few places on earth — or all of that capability without Singapore's price tag — look at China. This directory exists for that answer.
